The total marks in the SSB interview are equal to the written examination. Many candidates fail the SSB interview even after passing the NDA or CDS exam many times. How to Prepare for SSB Interview
To pass the SSB interview, 80% mental and 20% physical effort is required. The Selection Board examines the OLQs (Officer like qualities) in you to assess the personality appropriate for the army, your style of solving real problems, and your aptitude for life and goals. SSB interviews are a 5-day process. Following are the day-wise procedure of SSB interview-
On the first-day screening test is taken which consists of OIR (Officers Intelligence Rating) test and PPDT (Picture Perception & Description Test) test.
In the OIR test, you are given a set of 50 questions of Quantitative Aptitude and Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning and 30 minutes to solve it. After this, in the PPDT test, you are shown a static picture on the projector for 30 seconds, seeing that you have to write a live and thoughtful story.
On this day you will be called for a Psychology test. In these tests, you will be given the following tests-
TAT (Thematic Appreciation Test) – In this test, you will be shown 11 blurred pictures one by one on the projector and you have to write a positive story on them. Instead of the 12th picture, a blank screen will be shown in which you have to write your description.
WAT (Word Association Test) – It is one of the projection techniques used to know the psychology of the candidates. In this, you are shown 60 words of English one by one on the projector and you have to write a sentence in your own words on the positive events related to these words.
SRT (Situation Reaction Test) – SRT is conducted after WAT and you are given 10 minutes to answer these questions. The total number of questions in this test is 60 and you have to write at least 2-3 sentences on each situation.
The third and fourth day
On the third and fourth days, you participate in GTO tasks. GTO (Group Testing Officer) is the most important person in the SSB interview as he takes 2 full days to assess your abilities. GTO testing consists of the following tasks:
Group Discussion (GD) – In this, two topics will be given to your group for discussion.
Group Planning Exercise (GPE) – This test consists of 5 parts
– Instructions by GTO
– 5-minute self-reading
– In the next 10 minutes, you have to write your plan
Finally, in 20 minutes your group will have to tell a common plan
Progressive Group Task (PGT) – PGT is a set of obstacles created in an open area in which team members have to overcome each obstacle by following the rules laid down. The difficulty level of this task increases with each obstacle.
Group Obstacle Race– This is also called the snake race and your group has to pass this race with 6 obstacles. Here GTO looks at the quality of cooperation and leadership in the team.
Half Group Task (HGT) – HGT is similar to PGT in that the group is divided into two parts. Here GTO wants to see your personal performance. The rules in HGT are the same as in PGT.
Lecturette – In this round, you have to give a speech in front of your group in 3 minutes. Good marks depend on your expression, body language, speech fluency, confidence, and knowledge of current affairs.
Individual Obstacles – In this round, you have to cross 10 obstacles alone. These obstacles include a single ramp, double barrel, beam balancing, screen jump, Burma Bridge, Tarzan swing, double platform jump, double ditch, commando walk, and tiger leap.
Command Task – The objective of this task is to check the commanding ability of the candidate and it is usually conducted before the FGT. In this, you can choose any two members of your group. This task is also similar to HGT and PGT.
Final Group Task (FGT) – This is the final task of GTO testing. This task is done by all the members of the group together and the rules are the same as in PGT and HGT. This task is very difficult and time-consuming. Therefore, very little time is given for the planning and execution of this task.
This is the last day of the SSB interview. On this day, you are called in the conference for verification before the panel and after that, the results are declared.
You can be called for personal interview anytime between the second and fourth day. The Interview Officer will always be a top officer ie Colonel or Brigadier. Personal interviews are an integral part of SSB in which the information entered in your PIQ (Personal Information Questionnaire) form is combined with your personality.

Current affairs are very important for success in Psychology tests, lecture rounds, and personal interviews.
